A transparently cool record player

North London’s Gearbox Records’ automatic turntable sounds as hip as it looks

Who would have thought that in this ludicrously futuristic-sounding year of 2020, CD players would be principally for old people, but turntables would be almost the exclusive preserve of the young? I quite like vinyl, even though I gave most of my collection to my hip, Camberwell-dwelling daughter years ago. I sometimes enjoy an evening spinning discs on the fabulous Plus Audio The+ Record Player, which was one of my top tech picks of last year. But while that’s an elegant, retro record deck-amp combo, it’s not exactly cool.

This, from a north London, vinyl-led music label, Gearbox Records, is. It’s transparent. It has a supremely trendy valve pre-amp (not to be laughed at as mere hipster fodder – these things really do add wonderful warmth to the sound). Oh, and it has an app that adds all the stuff you play on vinyl to your Spotify playlist. Course it does.
