A mic that makes phone videos sing

The Sennheiser Memory Mic is a neat, clever way to boost the soundtrack on phone videos

However good the camera on your phone is, there will come a time in your line of work when you want to use it to film something – it could be a presentation, a speech, a video blog – and the sound recording the phone offers will let you down. This compact, high-quality remote clip-on mic from Sennheiser is a simple, light (about 30g) and compact way to boost the soundtrack on phone videos. The Memory Mic isn’t just a Bluetooth-connected microphone. It will store up to four hours of audio internally, so can be placed way beyond Bluetooth range and then, when it’s reunited with your phone, will transmit the recording and sync it with the video you’ve been shooting via a Sennheiser app. It’s really rather a clever and unusual trick, and while the sound from its omnidirectional condenser mic capsule isn’t quite Hollywood movie quality, it will more than suffice for most purposes – and is certainly broadcastable.

Every office should have one – and it’s a great accessory to borrow at weekends for home videos too. I can imagine a few of these being attached in their downtime from office duties to wedding dresses, children taking their first bike ride and the like.
