The iPhone’s storage capacity is always on an upwards trajectory – the top model £1,149 X now has 256GB. The latest operating system, iOS 11, also compresses space-greedy videos more efficiently. But it’s a law of nature that the more storage you have, the more video you’ll shoot, meaning that even with the 256GB iPhone, you are still liable to run out of space one of these days. And unless you understand the devilishly complicated iCloud settings – which nobody on the planet possibly can – you won’t be able to rely on all your stuff being automatically uploaded to the cloud.
A big hand, then, to digital storage supremo Kingston for this, its DataTraveler Bolt Duo Flash Drive for iPhone, which also works for iPad, should you be of the tribe that likes to use a tea tray to take photos. It allows visual material to be downloaded swiftly and without faff from your iThing, ready for transfer via the inbuilt USB 3.0 connecter to a computer.
Physical overflow gadgets are a little retro these days, but that does not – at least in my book – make them undesirable. And Kingston’s take on the idea is the best and neatest I have seen. The Bolt Duo comes in capacities from 32GB to 128GB and, for those who care about such things, has a nice squidgy silicone sleeve that can live unobtrusively on a keyring.
