BFI and IWC’s fundraising gala at London’s Guildhall

Preserving film and TV stocks by auctioning off movie artefacts

The British Film Institute will be rolling out the red carpet at London’s Guildhall this Tuesday for its annual Luminous fundraising gala in partnership with watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen – a dinner and auction that raises funds to restore, preserve and digitise the UK’s national collection of film and TV programmes. The inaugural event in 2013 made £250,000 and this year the auction will be open to online bidders for the first time.

The lots will include a “once-in-a-lifetime film experience and extraordinary movie artefacts”, and previous spoils have included a fully operational replica Formula One car that appeared in Ron Howard’s Rush. A lot that has been revealed, however, comes courtesy of IWC, which has donated a one-off timepiece – the platinum Portugieser Annual Calendar “BFI London Film Festival 2015” Edition.
