Opumo: a cool cache of men’s accessories

Shopping for men’s Christmas presents just got a whole lot easier

What kind of man are you or are you buying for? Sporty, gadgety, high-flying? Get that one right and shopping for men’s accessories just got significantly easier. By suggesting six principal personality types, online retailer Opumo has made shopping for the man you are, or the man you’d like to be, that much quicker – and infinitely more satisfying.

Click on a type – Deal Maker, Gadgeteer, Sportsman, High Flyer, Après Skier and Media Mogul – and the intuitive Opumo site directs you straight to hundreds of suitable accessories, from techie wallets and cases, to belts, watches and ties. English brands such as hip umbrella makers London Undercover (fourth picture) and traditional glove-makers Dents sit beside hard-as-nails American outdoor brand Filson, Californian Garret Leight’s retro-cool eyewear, Canada’s Herschel Supply Co’s wallets and knapsacks, and Scandi offerings from Mismo (leather laptop cases and canvas weekend bags) and Berg & Berg (ties, pocket squares and woolen hats).

As an alternative, Opumo, set up by London friends Nicholas Ayoub and Harry Beattie, arranges items according to price; for Christmas, for example, gift ideas range from under £50, to under £500. My wife gave the choices for a Media Mogul stocking filler a spin, and came up with a pot of Baxter of California clay pomade (£18, third picture), saying it would give my hair some pre-conference lift stepping off the red-eye, and a beautiful navy leather Italian zip wallet from Il Bussetto (£55). Insisting I am worth much more, she clicked on the up to £300 link and unearthed a handsome set of neo-industrial Oliver Brass cuff links (£110, second picture) by Alice Made This. Taking Opumo to its limit, she found what must be the best travel bag that an aspiring Media Mogul could hope for: a J Panther Luggage canvas Aviator Messenger bag (£394, first picture) – a shoulder holster with slots for pens, passport, tickets and iPad.

Thinking about the inclement weather I clicked on the Sportsman link and discovered Oxford Blue and Fair Isle wool Touchscreen gloves (£40) from Etre, for working a smartphone or iPad outdoors in the big chill. Men’s accessory shopping just got a lot more fun – and last day for Christmas delivery is December 23.
