Barbour’s archive-led Beacon Heritage line has collaborated with the Savile Row tailor Norton & Sons. Taking inspiration from the workwear of the shipbuilding and fishing industries along the Northumbrian coast, the knits (from £149) and South Shields-made beeswax-cotton jackets (from £499), with triple-layered front fastenings and detailed collar closures, are genuinely rugged but also good-looking. “We slimmed them down a fraction and added a little shape to make them more like coats we cut on Savile Row,” explains Norton & Sons’ owner and creative director Patrick Grant. “The change is subtle; I didn’t want to stray from the simple charm of the original shapes.” He referenced a Barbour catalogue from 1910 for the exceptional fisherman’s knits such as the Bern Crew jumper (£199), which resemble the old Northumbrian guernseys in shape and come in natural-toned Shetland wools.
