From loafers to trainers, shoes with thick rubber soles were featured throughout the spring/summer 2020 men’s collections. Many of these sturdy styles are an evolution of practical, waterproof wellies, such as Fendi’s rustic boots featuring the brand’s signature brown stripe. They also chime with the current taste for oversized footwear. “Exaggerated rubber soles have grown in popularity within the designer menswear scene,” says Mr Porter buying manager David Morris. “These substantial chunky soles and rubber details take inspiration from nostalgic 1990s style, which is prevalent this season and continues into the fall collections.” Morris points to Prada and Bottega Veneta as brands that are championing this look – there are also colourful, multitextured trainers from Dolce & Gabbana and a sporty take on the Tod’s Gommino loafer. Here are our top picks of the season.
