The shirt

It’s time to shift a wardrobe gear into high-summer mode, with a looser and cooler fit and fabric. Mayfair tailor Turnbull & Asser has released three styles of striped linen shirt that are versatile enough to be worn for smart occasions or thrown on for the beach. The aesthetic is vintage and continental, inspired by the kind of clothing you might find in French markets, but produced – meticulously – with the bold stripe pattern rendered in the weft rather than warp, making the weave softer. The shirts (£215), in five colourways, feature the brand’s new less formal collars (or none) and are available in limited numbers until the end of July. turnbullandasser.co.ukMARK C O’FLAHERTY

The shoes

The epitome of laidback Mediterranean cool, these Rivieras Pegase shoes (€60) in cotton canvas and mesh are based on a style of moccasin that was popular in Spain in the 1950s. They’re an ideal style to pack for both the beach and boardwalk. rivieras.com. LOREDANA TAGLIENTE

The light jacket

The new refined “shirt jacket” has no canvassing or shoulder padding, but includes traditional workshirt details and is designed to be worn loose rather than fitted to the body. P Johnson’s, in army green linen, lobster cotton and navy seersucker (all $395; custom-made, from $425), and grey or navy merino/cashmere ($595), are sharply cut yet classic in style. “Our merino/cashmere flannel shirt jackets are a beautiful alternative to the classic blazer,” says Patrick Johnson. pjt.com. TOM STUBBS

The swimming shorts

The signature Clipper range of swimming shorts by young British tailoring firm Hemingsworth is designed to transition seamlessly from prow to promenade: “Tailored shorts you can swim in, rather than swim shorts you can wear out of water”. The neat flat-front design was created with Savile Row tailors and each pair (£185), in cotton-blend casual tailoring cloth, is put together in 17 hand-finished stages using a 29-piece pattern. There are eight block-colour fabric choices, from navy to yellow, and seven seersucker stripes – all with mother-of-pearl buttons, metal buckles and mesh pockets. hemingsworth.com. MARC ABBOTT

The bag

This summer, British luggage brand Troubadour has launched three pieces in its DryFibre waterproof leather that is created by adding wax to its natural tanning solution. But for me, it’s all about the classy muted-burgundy colour the line comes in. Troubadour’s logo-free style works brilliantly for the weekender (£1,195), subtly distinguished by a simple tonal difference on the handle and detailing. troubadourgoods.com. TOM STUBBS
