The best gift I’ve recently received was a set of cushions and rugs from The Rug Company. I designed a collection with them, and they sent me one of each piece for my new house. I particularly like the Hutton runner, based on old Japanese woven kimono fabrics, and how digital and synthetic the colours are. It’s very difficult to get that with natural wool. therugcompany.com.

My boyfriend gave me a record player, a Rega with a beautiful wooden base. I like records because it means I experience a whole album from start to finish rather than skipping around with iTunes – although I do that too. rega.co.uk.

A bottle of Chartreuse VEP was a gift from my sons. The VEP is a very special aged version of the herb liqueur. I discovered it via my father, who was a gastronome. He was always dining in two- or three-Michelin-star restaurants and always had chartreuse after his meal as a digestif. absinthes.com.

The best gift was a wonderful 1930s curvy silver inkwell that my team gave me and I use every day. I still write all my letters by hand and in purple ink. They found it at Alfie’s Antique Market. 13-25 Church Street, London NW8 (alfiesantiques.com).

My daughter, Tata, sent me a bottle of Prodigieux by Nuxe fragrance from Paris. She gave it to me to take to hotels because often the bedrooms have a smell that I don’t like. I love the idea of using this scent to create my own atmosphere. £44.50 for 50ml EDP; nuxe.com.

The best gift I’ve recently been given is a portrait of my son, Jack, painted by Vanessa Garwood when he was born. It’s very small – sort of lifesize – and rough, on a piece of canvas. She captured a moment when he was so, so tiny – almost still in another world. I love it, as I love her. By appt, vanessagarwood.com.

I was recently given a full set of Schmincke oils from L Cornelissen & Son, a glorious art shop near the British Museum. I watercolour my fashion illustrations sometimes, but I’ve never used oils and I really want to find time to start painting again. 105 Great Russell Street, London WC1 (020-7636 1045; cornelissen.com).

My husband gave me some Tony Duquette chairs with little bells on, so when you sit they jingle-jangle a bit – totally over-the-top, crazy and very Hollywood. I originally thought they would make great pool chairs, but I love them so much I keep them in my drawing room. I only found out afterwards that they’re by Tony Duquette – the store owner contacted me to tell me. RT Facts Antiques, 22 South Main Street, Kent, CT 06757 (rtfacts.com).

My husband gave me a collection of old estate auction catalogues from Sotheby’s, including the collections of Bunny Mellon and Baron de Redé. There is always so much historical background to be found in them, and as a present it had a lot of thought and effort behind it. sothebys.com.
