This autumn marks the first time tuxedos are a defining element at Bottega Veneta. The neat shoulders and large, acute lapels, enhanced by understated luxurious fabrics, were indeed eye-catching: a smouldering dark wool/cotton gabardine jacket (£1,620), for example, a wool/silk twill number (£2,185) or a black polyamide cavalry-twill design (£1,620) with ribbon trim on double-breasted lapels, with trousers (£345) featuring side ribbon too. On the runway, these looks were set off with enormous bow ties (£115) in silk or black velvet, casual shoes and even, in a few instances, elegant knits – demonstrating, as creative director Tomas Maier stressed to me, that such outfits can also work as special occasion daywear.
