No one has defined the look of luxury shopping quite like Peter Marino, the Manhattan-based interiors guru who has become a style icon as well as a design star. Marino is as immediately recognisable as any of his projects – he continues to style himself like a character from one of Helmut Newton’s most outré bondage photostories, while globetrotting and conjuring up interiors for Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton.
This spring he has brought his personal style to two limited edition pens in collaboration with Caran d’Ache. Each has a leather body that echoes Marino’s obsession with S&M tropes, and each comes with a rhodium and silver-coated writing block. The Varius Peter Marino will be available in fountain (£1,300), roller (£1,200) and ballpoint (£1,100) versions, all bound with French Harrison calfskin with a crosshatch grey seam; the Varius Peter Marino Special Edition is more overt, with dramatic handmade leather lacing, and will be produced in fountain (£2,800) and roller (£2,300) versions.
One of the most striking aspects of the project is the cap on the Special Edition, which is reminiscent of the heavy metal chic rings that Marino wears on his fingers – a silver and rhodium-plated skull, with 0.5-carat black onyx eyes and an engraving of Marino’s own signature.
And the attention to detail is as exciting as the styling – each pen is marked with details of its edition. The Varius Peter Marino comes in a numbered series of 1/1978, referencing the year the designer first opened a studio in New York, while the Special Edition is numbered 1/150, a nod to the address of his current studio at 150 East 58th Street.
