Most people come to the charming town of Hudson, New York for the antiques stores (and, increasingly, hip hotels), but on a visit earlier this year it was Scandinavian beauty products I discovered. Face Stockholm is a cheerful emporium full of naturally derived, hypoallergenic and paraben-free creams, scrubs, toners and lipsticks.
Started by Stockholm-based Gun Nowak in 1980s, Face expanded westwards when her daughter, Martina Arfwidson, moved to New York in 1986, and more recently upstate to scenic Hudson. After a brief in-store sampling, it was the nourishing Marine Therapy Seaweed Night Cream ($32) that really stood out for me; it has since become something of an obsession, and I now apply it liberally to my face and neck before bed.
With its brown sea-algae extracts, seaweed and exfoliating kelp, the unscented moisturiser is packed with vitamins and minerals that block damaging free radicals, as well as hyaluronic acid and emollient-dense squalane. It manages to be rich but not the least bit greasy; it absorbs easily and, best of all, it works for sensitive, rosacea-prone skin.
The Night Cream is part of Face’s larger Marine Therapy regimen – one that includes Seaweed Eye Cream ($34), Toner ($24) and a Day Cream ($32) infused with jojoba seed and apricot kernel oil. I also have my eye on the Crème Blush ($25) in a subtle shade called Malmö.
