La Prairie: elevating science to art

Exploring the luxury house’s audacious art-inspired philosophy

The name La Prairie evokes innovation, performance and luxury. It also brings to mind the notion of Swissness, and the qualities of purity, precision and excellence associated with the leading luxury house’s home country.

Since its inception in 1978, Swiss brand La Prairie has been endeavouring to fulfil its quest for timeless beauty by combining the highest standards of advanced technology with exquisite formulations and elegant packaging — elevating skincare to art.

Through the prism of art

In many ways, the Bauhaus principle of “form follows function” has been the luxury skincare maker’s blueprint. Across the precision-designed packaging, the seamless store design and the understated, elegant client experience, art flows through and defines everything La Prairie does.

Inspired by the codes and values of contemporary aesthetic movements, La Prairie seeks to transport those who enter its world to a place where time stands still, a place where beauty – just like art – transcends the ages. The Swiss brand’s artistic endeavours can be explored at leisure through a dedicated mobile app.

An intrinsic link with art

From its very beginning, the world of La Prairie has been inextricably linked to the world of art. The brand’s audacious spirit, illustrated by its willingness to break the codes of luxury and to follow untrodden paths that surprise as much as they inspire, mirrors the traits of the audacious spirit found in the artist: explorer, pioneer, adventurer.

It seems only fitting, therefore, that La Prairie shares its vision of audacity, aesthetics and timelessness with the wider world by partnering with the world’s premier contemporary art fairs and collaborating with visionary artists. Through these partnerships and beyond, La Prairie has made a commitment to nourish and promote artists with whom it has a shared connection, vision and values.

Art Basel

In 2017, La Prairie partnered with Art Basel, the world’s leading art platform, in a first-of-its-kind partnership. Founded in 1970 by gallerists from the Swiss city of Basel, Art Basel today stages the world's premier modern and contemporary art shows in Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong.

For its first artistic collaboration with Art Basel, La Prairie partnered with artist Paul Codamy, the creative energy behind a stunning geometric structure of lacquered steel and magnets, that followed the form of the complex mathematical formula, Weaire-Phelan.

La Prairie’s partnership with Art Basel rose to the next level in 2018, with the brand becoming a world partner. To mark this new milestone, La Prairie commissioned a film installation on the power of light by Swiss artist Julian Charrière, which was exhibited at Art Basel in Hong Kong.

That same year, La Prairie’s pavilion in the Collector’s Lounge of Art Basel in Basel featured works by Swiss artist Manon Wertenbroek, who created a series of photographic works that highlighted the design, science and indulgence inherent to the brand. The works were inspired by an artistic virtual dialogue with Niki de Saint Phalle, La Prairie’s aesthetic godmother.

La Prairie continued its 2018 series of collaborations at Art Basel in Miami Beach. There, the Swiss architect Mario Botta unveiled his piece Archisculpture, at once a sculpture and a structure, combining the codes of Bauhaus so closely associated with La Prairie’s own design aesthetic, and offering a completely singular, uncommon, enveloping experience underscoring the origins of life.

The 2019 edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong saw a collaboration with South Korean artist Chul-Hyun Ahn, a recognised figure in the world of optical and light art. The illuminating exhibition was composed of a series of three unique works, urging the viewer to consider humankind’s boundless quest to explore the notion of timelessness and the poetry of light.

For the 2019 edition of Art Basel in Basel, La Prairie sponsored three up-and-coming Swiss female photographers, graduates of the esteemed Lausanne University of Art and Design (ECAL), renowned for promoting Swiss creativity around the world and ranked among the world’s top 10 universities of art. Each with their own unique approach, Daniela Droz, Namsa Leuba and Senta Simond represent the new guard of contemporary photography.

Art Basel in Miami Beach 2019 marks La Prairie’s third year of partnership with Art Basel. With each edition, La Prairie strives to select partner-artists who share the luxury house’s values. La Prairie sees contemporary art as a prism through which to express its story, and it encourages the artists with whom it collaborates to interpret La Prairie’s heritage and values through their own artistic perspective.
