Every piece of work has behind it a unique story, a narrative of how it came from concept to reality. This process typically begins with an idea, translated to a sketch, followed by rounds of exhaustive production, resulting in a final, perfected outcome. At JANUS et Cie, every collection endures this intensive process, but also going one step further to explore the relationship between form and function, thus creating a masterpiece.
What exactly is a masterpiece? An impressive body of work that achieves an unparalleled level of excellence. Craftsmanship that transcends time, to be enjoyed for generations. At JANUS et Cie, a Masterpiece collection begins with exquisite composition; like fine art, the canvas and paint must be of the utmost quality. With a formidable foundation, the JANUS et Cie’s Masterpiece collections are then engineered with finest materials and finishes, skilfully handcrafted employing time-honoured traditions.
Truly great design is eternal, especially when a collection is thoughtfully designed with beauty, integrity and superior craftsmanship in mind. Every Masterpiece collection created by JANUS et Cie is precisely engineered, and skilfully finished using the most artisanal of processes. The extraordinary Masters Aluminum Series is the brainchild of two visionaries: JANUS et Cie’s founder and CEO Janice Feldman and design legend Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. History is the inspiration here, with each design revealing exquisite artistry that conveys the elegance of traditional design: clean lines, detailed precision and classic silhouettes, with a flair of modernity. “Time and timelessness is very important to me,” says Diaz-Azcuy of his philosophy. “I cannot design for a single tense. Good design should understand past, present and future.”
JANUS et Cie employs skilled craftspeople, immersed in traditional weaving techniques to shape, weave and finish each piece, eventually creating a product that is light, durable and infinitely beautiful. Such skills are embodied in Fibonacci, a Masterpiece creation by famed American architectural partners Michael Gabellini and Kimberly Sheppard that is brilliantly woven entirely by hand by the most experienced and dexterous artisans. The collection explores the geometric structures found in nature and beautifully interprets them into an iconic collection.
Janice Feldman continues to astonish and impress with the creation of the Konos collection, a Masterpiece series that draws upon the finest sustainably grown teak, inspired by the cool, effortless serenity of Greek seaside villages. Two additional Feldman-designed collections that bear the Masterpiece title are Boxwood and Wing. With Wing, Feldman considered the breathtaking curve of a bird’s wing, translating the delicate arc of the appendage into handwoven curves. Here, luxury and craftsmanship converge. “The texture of the furniture combined with the luxe cushions and pillows achieves a richness that stops short of extravagant,” says Feldman of the collection. “It takes the artisan four weeks to weave one sofa.”
These carefully crafted Masterpiece collections have produced flawlessly executed designs built to be passed down as family heirlooms and cherished for generations. A Masterpiece, after all, is meant to endure and intrigue for eternity.
