Clean-lined and chic stuff for the home

An American e-store with a cosy yet sophisticated eye

Founded in 2009 by British interior stylist Abby Kellett, www.gretelhome.com is a US-based e-boutique selling a carefully curated collection of clean-lined things for the modern home.

Kellett is clearly a woman with an eye for elegant design – and an ear always to the ground, because her store sells a well-balanced mix of work from respected big brands such as Iittala and Rosenthal (Medium Fast Vase in first picture, $124) and lesser-known talents, including Artecnica (Bird in Wonderland candle holder in second picture, $172) and Tina Ratzer, whose chic and graphic Twist a Twill blankets ($139) perfectly sum up the store’s self-proclaimed aesthetic of cosy sophistication.

Though, of course, you can search by brand, the simplest way to shop is by selecting one of the 10 main departments (Decorative, Dining, Drinking, Textiles, Lighting, Functional, Kids & Baby, Gifts by Price, New and Sale) listed on the home page, followed by the most appropriate sub-department. Once there, you can either search by specific brand name or click on “all” and take pot luck.

The former is certainly quicker, but by going straight to your favourite brand you risk missing out on the joy of the serendipitous surprise. For example, had I gone straight to a tried-and-true favourite, Thomas Paul, in “Dining and Kitchen Accessories”, I would never have found Muuto’s Hang Around Kitchen Utensils ($45) – which means I would not now be awaiting delivery of quite the most beautiful cooking tools I have ever seen.
