Thanks largely to Instagram, the art of the table has been thoroughly revived over the past few years – and with it comes a whole raft of delicious accessories we never knew we needed. Among them are those created by Allegra Marchiorello and Valeria Piovesana Thompson, who first met as law students in Strasbourg before founding their brand Once Milano in 2012. They set out to combine the timeless, quiet luxury of gorgeous Italian linens with a stunning palette that gives these traditional materials a fresh, contemporary look on napkins (from €32 for a set of two), placemats (from €35) and tablecloths (from €240). The saturated colours range from rich, earthy mustard and moss and forest green through to delicate vintage pink, sage and pale grey.
Since then the firm has gradually expanded its range, cutting its handmade Venetian linen into gloriously comfortable bedding (duvet covers from €230), throws (€150) and blankets (€360); as well as towels (from €58 for a set of two), dressing gowns (from €195) and pyjamas (from €165). There are also made-to-order pieces and the option to choose specific pipings, trims or monograms.
This summer the brand has come full circle, returning to the classic tableware that first inspired the designers with a new collection of exquisitely pretty macramé-trimmed napkins (€47) and tablecloths (€490), in 17 and 19 beautiful shades respectively and made using traditional methods. These are laidback linens with an everyday feel – but with their fine fabrics and craftsmanship they are also future heirlooms in the making.
