I’ve been trying to cut down on plastic. It’s an ongoing battle and one of the best – and best-looking – solutions I have found are these stylish ceramic alternatives to Tupperware containers. My beautiful blue Hokan bowls (£70 for a set of three) are as aesthetic as they are eco and perfect for putting leftovers in the fridge. I no longer need to hide the inside of it in shame. I use these multipurpose bowls for storing food, but the durable stoneware means they can also be used for oven cooking and they look good enough for serving too.
Rather surprisingly, these neat lidded bowls are the work of a British filmmaker Alistair Donald, whose father is the groundbreaking jeweller and goldsmith John Donald. It was Donald’s personal pursuit of a zero-waste, “no-plastic” lifestyle, as well as the precarious leaning towers of bowls and saucers in his fridge, that were the inspiration for Hokan, which means “safekeeping” in Japanese. The bowls have his mantra of “conscientious cooking and efficient living” at their core, and are stackable and space saving.
I have a growing collection of the bowls (£18-£28 each), which come in three sizes: 400ml, 600ml and 1 litre. They are available in the original Cobalt Blue, as well as four new colours: a minimalist Pitch Black, useful Antique White, deco Sea Green and lovely Lemon Yellow. Importantly, food looks good in them and I use them to serve up everything from Middle Eastern-style meze to individual fruit crumbles. And they are sacrosanct to leftovers. Now when I open my fridge, the contents is pleasingly sculptural and exotically blue.
