When June Summerill and Bernadette Bishop opened their eponymous store in Notting Hill’s Clarendon Cross in 1994, their mission statement was to create a collection of beautiful but functional items for the kitchen – from chic linens and rustic wicker baskets to classic glasses and crockery. The welcoming space they came up with felt like the most gorgeous Provençal kitchen you had ever entered, and the tightly honed aesthetic soon made Summerill & Bishop one of London’s most inspiring and influential stores.
Almost a quarter of a century later, the look is still impressively relevant and the brand’s stylish washed-linen tablecloths, with their hand-blocked, dip-dyed or handpainted designs, are particularly sought after. Now these linens can also be personalised (from £675 for a 300cm x 165cm design), making them perfect as housewarming gifts, wedding presents or simply to say thank you. Choose a word, name or date you’d like to have handpainted in large broad brushstrokes onto the creamy Italian linen in a range of enticing colours – including rose pink, grape purple, avocado green, midnight blue and claret. The linens look wonderful on colour-themed tables with matching handblown Bumba glasses (£48 each) and jugs (£235). Orders take around six weeks and can be applied to the brand’s duvet covers too.
