In Barcelona food and art are top of the agenda, for this is a city where magnificent gastronomy comes deeply entwined with the legacy of Picasso and Gaudí. Five-star Hotel Arts Barcelona is a perfect microcosm of the city, combining both of these fine traditions with exceptional bars and restaurants in an emblematic, art-filled modern building.

The dynamic food culture at Hotel Arts Barcelona takes in tasty tapas, Michelin-star meals, Spanish specialities and international dishes. Start the day at Lokal with a tantalising buffet piled high with organic produce and artisan pastries. Linger over an al-fresco lunch under the slatted canopy of Marina Restaurant, where a creative menu mixes Mediterranean, Peruvian and Asian choices. Choose the freshest fish or go with the chef’s suggestion, perhaps lobster taco with pico de gallo, extra-virgin olive oil and guacamole.

Then, as the warm Spanish day heads into the promise of a long, sociable evening, pull up a chair at P41 & Coctelarium, named for Barcelona’s own latitude coordinates and a wonderful addition to the city’s thriving cocktail scene. Master mixologist Diego Baud demonstrates his international repertoire in an atmospheric speakeasy-style bar where the cocktails overflow with flavours from along Parallel 41 and the drinks menu comes as a boarding pass.

Perhaps you’ll order a glass of champagne or choose spirits sourced from New York, Istanbul or Rome. Either way you are in safe hands, as Diego is an expert, winning awards for his more exotic creations as well as his imaginative presentation of negronis and gin and tonics.

Now is the time for the best of the best. A highlight of most stays is Enoteca Paco Pérez, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant overseen by chef Paco Pérez. He has won six Michelin stars over his stellar career and at Hotel Arts Barcelona he flexes his considerable talent, mixing avant-garde flair and traditional techniques in his Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Along with a memorable culinary experience, diners can expect calm sophistication, exceptional service and fine-wine pairing.

You still will not have experienced every restaurant on offer. All-day Bites serves a healthy menu, while the Infinity Pool & Lounge is by day somewhere for informal lounging and by night a vibrant music-filled hotspot.

At all five restaurants guests experience exceptional service thanks to the impeccably trained Ladies and Gentlemen of the Hotel Arts Barcelona. Stories of how they consistently delight guests are plentiful. A couple staying at Hotel Arts Barcelona who told their breakfast waitress of plans to travel to Mallorca early the following day found a surprise hamper left outside their bedroom door in the morning. In among the freshly baked croissants, fruit and juice was a personalised and detailed list of must-visit sites on the Balearic Island.

Another story involved two friends enjoying a piña colada at Marina Restaurant. The vigilant waiter saw this and arranged a surprise invitation to the Infinity Bar that evening for an impromptu cocktail lesson.

Even when off duty, Mariona, a restaurant manager at Hotel Arts Barcelona, demonstrated her passion for delighting customers. She was dining at a Barcelona restaurant when a Canadian couple at a neighbouring table initiated a conversation. Mariona discovered that the couple, true lovers of fine dining, were staying at the hotel and planning to visit Enoteca Paco Pérez later in the week. She prepared a foodie present for them and delivered it herself, ensuring their entire stay was highly personalised. The guests were thrilled and on their return home reciprocated by sending their own Canadian present back to Mariona.

In art and architecture as well as food the hotel reflects the passion of its home city. Hotel Arts Barcelona opened in 1994 in a distinctive building rising 44 floors above the beach. The remarkable building, the tallest along the coast, is a reenergised icon for Spain’s most visited coastal city, offering resort-style living in a compelling urban setting. Its position between the sea and the city provides epic views over both the superyacht marinas and charming low-key chiringuitos below.

Art is the recurrent theme throughout the hotel. A magnificent super-sized Frank Gehry fish sculpture dominates the gardens, its golden scales changing colour with the sunshine. Inside the hotel, over 500 artworks are perfectly complemented by the in-house floral artist, whose creative displays provide dramatic colour and scent.

Guests have a choice of 455 light-filled and ultra-comfortable guest rooms and suites. For a truly spoiling stay, choose one of the luxury serviced duplex Penthouses. These come with a host of benefits, including a personal-shopping concierge – invaluable in a city of such tantalising taste – and complimentary use of a Mini Cooper Cabrio to whizz around Barcelona.
