There’s never been a better time to start running to work, with the government advising commuters to avoid public transport and an increased focus on how we can all reduce our carbon footprint. There are other benefits too – it’s an efficient way of exercising, a great aide for mentally transitioning between home and work life, and puts cash back in the coffers. We’ve compiled a shortlist of all the gear you’ll need to get you to work in comfort.

The trainers: On Cloudstratus

These performance-focused running trainers offer a firmer tread with an added level of support and comfort (as is immediately noticeable from the double layer of “clouds”) . As such, they are ideally suited to the rigours of a twice-daily commute on foot – and the added cushioning is particularly welcome when carrying a backpack laden with gear. On Cloudstratus, £150, on-running.com

The backpack: Osprey Talon 22

With a carrying capacity of 22 litres, this backpack is roomy enough for all the essentials of a run-commute – a towel, a change of clothes and shoes, and your laptop. Equipped with padded hip and shoulder straps (plus a sternum strap), it offers good adjustability to suit different body shapes, thereby minimising any bouncing and rubbing when on the move. The back panel is constructed from foam and mesh, which further aids comfort and is ideal for cushioning expensive tech. Osprey Talon 22, £100, ospreyeurope.com

Stance Run crew socks, £13.99

The socks: Stance Run crew socks

Stance are great running socks. The crew is one of the brand’s longest sock styles, rising seven inches above the ankle, but they also come in shorter (tab) and mid (quarter) lengths, if you prefer something more discreet. The longer version helps to keep any dust or small stones from working their way into the sock, and they provide comfort for hours of running – with a thicker section along the sole of the foot and lighter, more breathable fabric on the top.
