Karuizawa tasting for Nepal Appeal

Exclusive news of a five-flight tasting of ultra-rare bottlings

It’s not often that one has the opportunity to taste some of the rarest whisky in the world and raise money for charity at the same time, but on Saturday October 3 at 5pm, 45 lucky ticket holders will get to do exactly that at a special Karuizawa masterclass in aid of earthquake-hit Nepal, hosted by The Whisky Exchange at its Whisky Show in London.

Currently one of the most sought-after names among rare whisky collectors, the silent Japanese distillery Karuizawa has seen prices for its single malts skyrocket in the past few years (for more on the rising value of Karuizawa, see The growing cult of lost distilleries). With stocks ever dwindling, opportunities to taste this whisky have been scarce, but on this occasion ballot winners will taste an unprecedented five Karuizawas in one sitting, including a never-before-seen Karuizawa 1983 Nepal Appeal bottling released by The Whisky Exchange in a run of just 50 especially for the event.

Rich and chocolatey, with spicy notes of pink peppercorn, nutmeg and sandalwood and more luscious Morello cherry, this broad-shouldered malt is classic Karuizawa and sure to become a collector’s item.

The other whiskies in the flight will be Karuizawa 1981, Sherry Cask #6056; Karuizawa 29yo, Bourbon Cask #8897; Karuizawa 1970, 42yo, Sherry Cask #6177; and Karuizawa 30yo, Sherry Cask #5347, a similar bottle of which recently fetched £2,700 at auction (Whisky.Auction).

The rarity of the tasting will be reflected in the ticket price, which is £6,000, including a bottle of Karuizawa 1983 Nepal Appeal to take home. Tickets will be allocated by ballot, with all proceeds going to support five charities involved in the restoration and development of Nepal in the wake of April’s earthquake: SWAT, Maiti Nepal, Help Nepal Network, Community Action Nepal and The Nepal Trust.

Those wishing to enter the ballot, which opens today and closes on Friday September 4, will need to purchase a Whisky Show day or weekend ticket – for full details, see the Whisky Show website.

But if you lose out in the ballot, fear not – the remaining two bottles of Karuizawa 1983 Nepal Appeal will be auctioned through Whisky.Auction (Monday October 26 to Tuesday November 3) and Bonhams Hong Kong (Friday November 20), with all proceeds, including the auctioneers’ commissions, going to help the same good causes.
