Looking around at the checked blanket laid out on the velvety green lawn, the blooming flowers and the retro-style ice-cream cart parked nearby, the scene is a bucolic London park on a beautiful summer’s day… but with one vital difference: it’s 244m above the city with breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the capital. We have Fortnum & Mason to thank, which has paired with The View From The Shard to offer an alfresco picnic-style afternoon tea on level 72 of Renzo Piano’s iconic landmark.
Available to book from May 1, for dates from June 23-September 8, 40 guests a day will be able to enjoy a “hamperling” for two (£85) filled with quintessential British fare, including classic sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, raspberry jam, tea or coffee, and (for £135) also a bottle of Fortnum’s champagne.
The picnics will take full advantage of blue skies and sunshine, but should the weather turn inclement, tickets to The View From The Shard will also be available with special afternoon tea packages at Fortnum & Mason’s Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon (from £130 per person). Or, in true British fashion, you can brave it under the umbrellas.
