Six of the best boulangeries and patisseries in Paris – personally recommended

From perfect pain des amis to heavenly choux, the chicest addresses in Paris for bread and pastries

Rose Carrarini, founder of Rose Bakery One of my favourite pastry shops is Pâtisserie Gilles Marchal. It’s tiny but worth going up the hill towards Montmartre for. There are fantastic cakes, Viennoiserie and biscuits, and everything is made in the studio at the back. The madeleines are the best in Paris. Pâtisserie Gilles Marchal, 9 Rue Ravignan, 75018 Paris (+331-8534 7330; gillesmarchal.com).

Adrian Cheng, art patron When I’m in Paris, I can’t resist the choux à la crème from Popelini, where the sweet mouthfuls twinkle like coloured diamonds – it’s like walking into Graff. Popelini, 29 Rue Debelleyme, 75003 Paris (+331-4461 3144; popelini.com).

Lucas Ossendrijver, artistic director, Lanvin I am always tempted by cake. There is a bakery right next to the office called Bread & Roses and I love its Mont Blanc cake, made with chestnuts, whipped cream and meringue. Bread & Roses, 62 Rue Madame, 75006 Paris (+331-4222 0606; breadandroses.fr).

Louise Trotter, creative director, Joseph The bakery Du Pain et Des Idées does everything in-house – which is becoming rare in Paris. I used to buy a fig tart occasionally, or a croissant in the morning, but then I tried the pain des amis. It’s crispy on the outside, and is in such great demand that they bake it constantly and you can almost always get it warm – it’s the best bread I have eaten in my life. €2.75 for 250g; Du Pain et Des Idées, 34 Rue Yves Toudic, 75010 Paris (+331-4240 4452; dupainetdesidees.com).

Francis Kurkdjian, perfumer My favourite indulgence is a religieuse pastry. It is made of two choux cases filled with coffee-flavoured cream and is delicious. The best are from Stohrer, a bakery that has been in business since the 1730s. Stohrer, 51 Rue Montorgueil, 75002 Paris (+331-4233 3820; stohrer.fr).

Alber Elbaz, fashion designer I love Les Deux Abeilles, run by a mother and daughter; they make the best cake in the world. Inside there is a little tree and every time I go, by some coincidence, the chair by the tree is empty and I always sit there. Les Deux Abeilles, 189 Rue de l'Université, 75007 Paris (+331-4555 6404).
