Here’s a rival to the Proustian madeleine: macarons may last little more than a moment in the mouth, but thanks to Ladurée’s personalisation service, the mini meringue marvels can now remain long in the memory.
Using a special edible ink, the French pâtisserie will inscribe any message, space permitting, on one of its macarons (£2.85 each; minimum order of 20). As well as “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Birthday” and anniversary congratulations, Ladurée has put names, dates and company logos on its creations. Luxury brands have commissioned numerous bespoke batches, Ladurée says, and happy couples have ordered versions announcing the date of their wedding.
Because the edible ink is dark, Ladurée recommends using it with lighter-coloured macarons, such as vanilla, orange blossom, rose, pistachio or caramel, although it can still be requested on varieties such as chocolate and blackcurrant violet.
Orders take two to three days to complete, and can be placed in store or over the phone. The ribbon on the packaging can also be personalised and Ladurée can create macaron centrepieces in any size, colour or shape – gravity permitting.
