Near the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, Westwind Orchard has been producing organic honeys and syrups since 2008, supplemented by cider from 2014. Its petite but perfectly formed e-store reflects its small-scale, artisanal aesthetic, and among the savoury standouts is a smoky tomato jam ($16 for 8oz) made according to an old family recipe that includes handpicked heirloom tomatoes, Himalayan and smoked kosher salts, sugar and apples.
Other intriguing takes on jam include an apple rosemary version ($15 for 8oz) and a raspberry chilli variety ($17 for 8oz) – each with just the right balance of spice and sweetness – while an award-winning raw honey ($22 for 11.5oz) is distinctly Hudson Valley and delightfully rich.
Westwind’s barrel-aged maple syrup ($39 for 12.6oz) is aged in white-oak casks and has hints of vanilla and caramel, while the exquisite bottles of honey apple cider vinegar ($22 for 12.7oz), topped with the farm’s signature red wax seal cap, are as pleasant to taste as they are to look at, making them ideal for not only stocking the pantry but giving as gifts as well.
Equally perfect for presents are the decadent chocolate bars ($13 for 60g), which come in flavours as inventive as the jams. Options include apple granola and white chocolate, Peruvian chocolate mixed with sugar pie pumpkin purée and roasted pumpkin seeds, and a dark chocolate take made with red chilli peppers.
There is also a noteworthy batch of non-edible items, including smart woollen hats ($15) and an ambrosia-maple cheeseboard ($270), finished with beeswax and mineral oil. As with all the site’s offerings, the raw materials are locally sourced and handhewn with incredible love and care.
