Ultra-luxe blended whisky brand Royal Salute is launching its 30-year-old Flask Edition with a short series of intimate tastings at the Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge, hosted by the brand’s aristocratic ambassador, the 13th Duke of Argyll.
Just 32 seats are available across the four-night run (£150 per head, minimum of two; 5.30pm and 7.15pm on June 21, 22, 28 and 29), which will see private tables of two to four people enjoying tête-à-tête tastings with the duke and Royal Salute’s UK whisky ambassador Phil Huckle in the glamorous surroundings of the Bulgari Hotel’s Il Bar.
The evenings will begin with a Royal Salute 21-year-old cocktail and an introduction to the duke (who is never short of an anecdote – his colourful life includes captaining Scotland’s national elephant polo team and being page of honour to Queen Elizabeth II), before the majestic 30-year-old is unveiled for its first tastings.
Featuring precious old malts from Speyside’s Longmorn distillery and the picturesque Strathisla (the oldest working distillery in the Highlands, as well as from a number of distilleries no longer in production, the blend has been aged in a mix of American and European oak, and knitted together with grain whiskies from Strathclyde. Complex and powerful, yet also generous, there are aromas of caramelised nuts, honey and densely packed dried fruits, while on the palate spices really come to the fore – ginger, nutmeg, pepper – along with toffee and zesty dried orange peel. Bottled at a cask strength of 49.7 per cent, it has a finish that’s long and textured, with a touch of mouthwatering saltiness.
This unique tasting will also be an opportunity to take a first look at the whisky’s limited edition flask, which was created by Greek-British designer Afroditi Krassa, who was inspired by Royal Salute’s iconic blue porcelain flagon.
And if you miss the boat for the tastings, fear not: the Royal Salute 30-year-old is now available to buy exclusively at Harrods (£600).
