Five of London’s best winter pop-up bars

Urban winter wonderlands, from hot-chocolate cocktail bars to a Scottish Highlands shooting simulator…

Winter at Dalloway Terrace
Winter at Dalloway Terrace

Winter at Dalloway TerraceSituated in literature-steeped Bloomsbury, it’s only apt that Dalloway Terrace should be turning its terrace into a Narnia-esque hideaway this Christmas. With foliage provided by local florist Nikki Tibbles at Wild at Heart, the thespian theme will also see classic films screened on Saturday nights – watch while sipping a Pierre Marcolini hot-chocolate cocktail (£12.50) or indulging in something from the fondue menu put together in collaboration with London cheese mecca La Fromagerie. Farmhouse Cheddar & Guinness and Classic Swiss (£8) should satisfy those with a savoury tooth, while White Chocolate Fondue with Clementines, Strawberries and Banana (£7) hits the sweet spot. 16-22 Great Russell Street, London WC1 (020-7347 1221; www.dallowayterrace.com)

The Cresta Bar at The GoringOtto Goring senior and junior, founders of Belgravia’s The Goring hotel, often headed to St Moritz in the winter, and now St Moritz is heading to The Goring with the opening of the Cresta Bar, named after the Alpine retreat’s famously hazardous toboggan track. Channelling the spirit of Kulm Hotel St Moritz’s Sunny Bar – the Cresta Run’s unofficial clubroom – The Goring’s veranda is serving a range of cocktails (from £15) with names inspired by the notorious route, such as Thrills & Spills (a knockout mix of gin, Aperol, orange juice, lime juice and elderflower cordial) and Cresta Punch (ginger wine, apple juice, honey and calvados served hot). Lodge d’Argent at Coq d’ArgentInspired by Little Red Riding Hood, City restaurant Coq d’Argent is transforming its rooftop into a festive wonderland, sprinkled in a white, red and gold colour scheme and plumped up with fur blankets. Le Petit ChaperonRouge’s French origins are reflected in a menu featuring Raclette Gratin (£13), Leek and Comté Tart (£7.50) and Pomme Frites with Chablis and Black Truffle Mustard Mayonnaise (£7.50). The cocktails (£11.50) are all winter warmers, from the Mitten (cognac, dark chocolate liqueur and gingerbread), to the Fire Wood (Pedro Ximénez sherry and Kahlúa with orange and walnut bitters). 1 Poultry, London EC2 (020-7395 5000; www.coqdargent.co.uk)

Mac & Wild’s City pop-upMac & Wild is sticking to its guns this Christmas with a pop-up on Devonshire Square featuring a Highland shooting simulator, as well as the Scottish food for which it has received such rave reviews (Giles Coren called it the best restaurant in the world in his Times review). The award-winning Veni-moo Burger (£10) is not to be missed, while new dishes for the pop-up include Isle of Gighe halibut (£20) and Scottish langoustine (£40 per half bucket). For those interested not just in eating food but preparing it too, there will be haggis-making masterclasses, and for Christmas gift ideas try the chocolate and whisky pairing sessions, which can be bought as vouchers. 9A Devonshire Square, London EC2 (020-7637 0510; www.macandwild.com)

Sartoria’s Campari winter terraceOver on Savile Row, Sartoria is tailoring its Libare Bar to recreate the atmosphere of Italian ski resort Cortina d’Ampezzo on its terrace. It is also partnering with Campari on a range of seasonal cocktails, including the Japanese Negroni (£11), which blends the Italian liqueur with plum sake, lemon and sugar, and the Sbagliato (£10), which adds Cocchi vermouth and prosecco.
