Jackson Hole in Wyoming has emerged as a world-class ski destination, but powder isn’t its only competence: a good Indian summer is one of the finest times to enjoy its cinematic landscapes. Opening just in time for this is Caldera House (calderahouse.com; from $2,500 to $4,500 for a two-bedroom suite), a haute hotel with a prime location right in Teton Village, a two-minute walk from the Mountain Resort tram.

Caldera House considerably ups the ante on a stay in these parts: design firms Commune and Carney Logan Burke are responsible for the spare but sumptuous interiors in the two- and four-bedroom suites; and its owner, Fortress Investment Group co-founder (and old Jackson Hole hand) Wesley Edens, is in the process of convening a roster of local talents – ranging from an award-winning National Geographic photographer to an Olympic downhill gold medallist – to develop experiences for his guests.
