“I worked with Afghan artisan carvers to produce this chessboard, and we have also collaborated with them on large-scale projects, such as the suite we designed at the Connaught. Much of Afghanistan’s economy is based on heroin production, but these projects create alternative employment and help to fund our education programmes in IT, language and business skills.”
