Every year, cancer charity Macmillan asks a handful of celebrities to conjure up their dream Christmas stocking. The items are then donated to Macmillan – along with a money-can’t-buy experience from each celebrity, such as film-set visits – and the stockings are auctioned at a black-tie gala. Last year Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Emilia Fox and Benedict Cumberbatch took part and their stockings raised £100,000 of the evening’s total £205,000 for charity.

On top of the star auction, hosted by Sotheby’s Edward Rising, guests at the Park Lane Hotel event in London can also expect live entertainment before rocking around the Christmas tree – in this case a twinkling Tree of Surprises, from which guests can pick a present (from luxury cosmetics to festive hampers) in return for a donation to the charity. Sleighs at 12.30am. December 8. Tables from £2,000; 020-7840 4800; www.macmillan.org.uk. All ticket and auction proceeds go to Macmillan.
