Snap up an iconic image for charity

Leading photographers donate portraits for an NSPCC auction

This transfixing gaze belongs, of course, to the late actor Oliver Reed – and he could soon be looking at you from your very own wall, if you make the winning bid for the superb photograph at an auction at Bonhams, Knightsbridge, on Thursday May 17. The auction house is co-hosting the photography sale with the NSPCC, and all funds raised will go towards the charity’s Rebuilding Childhoods Appeal, which aims to support children and young people who have been victims of abuse.

The image of Oliver Reed (first picture) was shot by Alistair Morrison, whose work will hang alongside celebrity portraits by other stellar snappers, including Terry O’Neill (a fabulous shot of Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot larking about on set during filming of Shalako in 1968), David Bailey (a quizzical, baseball-capped Damien Hirst against a background of his brilliant butterflies; third picture), Patrick Demarchelier (a topless, 17-year-old Christy Turlington) and Sølve Sundsbø (a mermaid-like, topless shot of Kate Moss, which she and Sundsbø have donated to the auction). Alongside these images of famous faces, there are also some more enigmatic pieces, such as fashion photographer Miles Aldridge’s Extravagant, Sophisticated Lady (second picture).
