The Scottish Craft Design House’s new capsule collection of homewares and fashion pays homage to the pioneering 20th-century explorer Isobel Wylie Hutchison. A botanist and poet, she travelled through Iceland, Greenland and northern Alaska at a time when polar exploration was primarily the domain of men; she reported for National Geographic and in 1934 was awarded the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Mungo Park Medal. The collection is available through the website of Carlowrie Castle, in Kirkliston, where Hutchison lived until her death, aged 92, in 1982. Ten per cent of proceeds from all products, including the Carlowrie jumper (£380), Alaskan Sloping scarf (£160) and Arctic Moon gold and silver ring-locket (£828), will support the RSGS’s educational programmes on climate change and its efforts to catalogue and preserve Scottish geographical history.
