Fans of glassware are in for a treat as pioneering American glassblower Dante Marioni stages a solo show – his first UK exhibition since 2015 – at Messums Wiltshire until January 27.

As one of the world’s foremost practitioners of reticello – the complex Venetian technique that imbues glass with a decorative grid-like pattern – Marioni’s exploratory approach lends the material a remarkable eloquence, which is reflected in a collection that ranges from reticello acorns (£12,000) to sinuously attenuated designs like Gold Topaz Maze (£18,000) – a creation reminiscent of a classical vase. Indeed, Ivory Pair (£14,000) – elongated jugs with long-stemmed glass – are pieces that could well have been conjured from a classical painting. The artist’s bold colour combinations are also evident, adding vibrancy to his latest work, which includes Blue in Blue Z leaf (£18,000) and Green in Purple Z leaf (£16,000).

“Dante is probably the greatest exponent of glass as an art form working single-handedly anywhere in the world today,” says Johnathan Messum, director of Messums Wiltshire. “These pieces, in part, reconsider archaic and traditional vessel shapes – known for their beauty in their own right – which lends them lasting appeal for collectors.”
