Launched in 2014 in Kiev at the height of the Ukrainian revolution, Sleeper is the brainchild of former fashion editors Asya Varetsa and Kate Zubarieva. The company specialises in creating beautiful handmade sleepwear that can transition into daywear, and with its debut collection caught the eye of the late editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia Franca Sozzani, who named Sleeper a brand of the month.

Varetsa and Zubarieva have designed a limited edition cotton “Power PJ” ($200 with shorts; $245 with trousers), launched to mark October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with 40 per cent of proceeds going to the Women’s Health and Family Planning Fund, a local Ukraine charity that specialises in rehabilitating women after chemotherapy. Each set of pyjamas is made to order (meaning waste is minimised) by Ukrainian seamstresses, many with over 30 years of professional experience.
