Clouds made out of polystyrene cups, stalagmites from stacks of plastic cards and landscapes made of pencils and straws – the sculptures of Tara Donovan are symphonies in the art of the readymade and have won her numerous awards including the inaugural Calder Prize in 2005 and a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” award.

For her latest exhibitionTara Donovan: Compositions, running from January 24 until March 9, her 10th at Pace Gallery in London, she’s returned again to plastic cards (similar in size and texture to credit cards), this time creating a series of wall-mounted framed “pictures” that may look like static monochrome pieces from afar, but upon closer inspection become undulating fields of material with a rhythmic pattern of light and shade.

One of the most beautiful is one of the smallest but also the most complex, with shadowy shapes that break and reform with the subtle nuance of a painting by Braque.

The pictures come in two sizes and two prices: the larger ones measuring around a metre square cost $65,000 each and the smaller ones around half a metre wide are $35,000 each.
