The annual ARC Rally sees some 200 boats sailing 2,700 nautical miles from Gran Canaria to St Lucia. Two of the fleet are entered by Tall Ships Adventures, which gives amateur sailors the chance to cross the Atlantic (from £3,895). There will be a training weekend on October 13–15 in Portsmouth and the rally begins a month later, on November 19. Each boat’s team of 16, led by a skipper and crew, will aim to cross the finish line by December 5. This year, Tall Ships has extended its itinerary to 27 nights to include approximately five nights cruising around Antigua afterwards.
All proceeds go to Tall Ships Youth Trust, the UK’s oldest sail training charity, with amateur sailors also encouraged to fundraise individually. The Trust enabled more than 1,400 young people to take to the water last year, almost 80 per cent of whom were disadvantaged or disabled.
