On learning that London Fire Brigade decommissioned fire hoses were sent to landfill, designers and husband and wife-to-be James “Elvis” Henrit and Kresse Wesling set up a company to upcycle them into lifestyle accessories – in 2012 Elvis & Kresse was named as one of Walpole’s brands of tomorrow. The company refashions the hoses into red satchels (£270), customisable purses (from £99) and even cufflinks (from £36) – and donates 50 per cent of the profits from the range to the Fire Fighters Charity.

It has also started upcycling other materials: a handwoven leather rug (£350 per sq m, in dark brown, black or caramel) made with offcuts from British manufacturers can be ordered in any size or shape, and can be taken apart and remade an infinite number of times. Half of the profits go to community-based renewable-energy projects.
