A dark designer’s cool clothes come to London

A visit to Rick Owens’ gothic baroque shop in Paris’s Palais Royal is essential when I’m in the French capital – the softly-draped jersey, asymmetric grey top I bought at the start of spring (about €280) is an anytime foil to most separates. The same clothes have a surprisingly minimalist setting at the shop he has opened quietly on a corner of South Audley Street in London, but they look just as cool surrounded by white and concrete – a washed grey leather jacket with high, asymmetric zipped collar (pictured; about £1,400) is my autumn favourite.

The Paris-based Californian Owens, one of fashion’s darker characters, tells me, “I’m not exactly Mr Excitement, so a big opening wasn’t my style. I hope customers will find us – sometimes it’s interesting to do the wrong thing at the wrong time in the wrong place. I fell in love with this corner, across from a church and a flower stall – very Miss Marple in St Mary Mead.”
