Much as I love colour and print, I am on a constant fashion quest for the perfect black cardigan and the superlative black vest – two items that are surprisingly elusive. But recently, I stumbled upon the latter quite by chance.
I was actually looking for a warm but not repellant style of thermal vest in which to survive the French winter. My search led me to revisit Hanro, the Swiss brand whose camisoles and underwear in top-quality cotton are much revered in fashion circles. The brand is not, however, normally associated with outer garments.
But while I was browsing its thermal offering in Selfridges’ lingerie department, my eyes alighted on the Line tank top (£36.50). Cut long and narrow in the body, it is made from high-quality cotton and contains six per cent elastane, so that it keeps its shape in the wash. (In my experience, vests with Lycra tend to bunch up, but this one doesn’t.) It might not have thermal qualities, but I’ve stocked up for summer, since it is easily the best black vest I’ve ever found. Now, if only I could find the perfect black cardigan to go with it...
