Refining one’s appreciation of the environment informs several extended train journeys throughout south-east Asia, just introduced by luxury rail nonpareil Eastern & Oriental Express (www.orient-express.com; from £2,400 per person).

The six-night Fables of the Hills route (£5,500) explores deepest Malaysia, meandering through the Cameron Highlands in central Pahang with an extended two-day exploration of Penang’s chic charms. Meanwhile, north-eastern Thailand is the star of an itinerary (from £5,500) that takes in Khao Yai National Park and Prasat Sikhoraphum in Surin Province, a ravishing Khmer temple sanctuary dating back to the 12th century.
