A classic design that will look good in decades to come

Among my Christmas gifts this year were a couple of items which reminded me of the power of the colour green. The first was an Anya Hindmarch clutch (see my previous Reconnoisseur) in a very dark and very appealing shade of green. The other was a leather-clad Roberts Revival DAB radio (£149.95 at John Lewis).

This is a sturdily-built piece of craft, with its foldaway brass aerial, contrast-stitched handle and brass-clasped “door” to reveal the inside works. It’s like a glamorous handbag that you can listen to, with a rich, traditional sound that belies its thoroughly modern DAB equipment.

The Revival comes in seven colours – the box shows the somewhat flash red and the girlie powder blue – but the dark green is unquestionably The One. Like the Hindmarch clutch, it's a classic design that will look good in decades to come, and is all the better for going green.
