If you don’t feel like splashing out on a new coat this winter, you could do the American thing of “shopping your closet” – rethinking and possibly reworking the garments you already own. You can update the look of a cheapish coat by changing the buttons. Shop around for vintage buttons in antiques shops or track down some gorgeous new ones and you can (almost) have a brand-new coat.

Chic stylist Vanessa de Lisle also suggests rummaging around in flea markets for vintage fur and then cutting and trimming it to toss over coats and jackets, à la Lanvin (pictured).
