Having topped the style ranks with popular hat boutiques in Amsterdam and Düsseldorf, Marly Vroemen is hoping to do the same in London’s Mayfair with her newly opened boutique, Hat Gallery M/V. Vroemen is marking her new residency on Conduit Street with a special selling exhibition (from May 19), featuring the work of three Royal College of Art alumni: Soren Bach, Justin Smith of J Smith Esquire and Noel Stewart (whose Coral Bay design is pictured). She has hand-picked this trio as “ones to watch”. “All three cross the boundary between art and millinery,” she says, “and we are delighted to be promoting their work.”
Among the edit of ready-to-wear and one-off pieces for sale will be Copenhagen-based Soren Bach’s innovative fur pieces, which he creates by cutting intricate patterns into the fur before dyeing. London-based Justin Smith – who was awarded the BFC’s Young Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2010 and boasts collaborations with Moschino and Carolyn Massey – will be offering unique pieces similar to his highly theatrical Light collection, which featured painted-plywood wing-shaped headpieces.
Meanwhile, fellow Londoner Noel Stewart, whose autumn/winter 2011 collection is awash with hand-painted colourful numbers, will be offering customers the opportunity to customise existing designs from his ready-to-wear range – a service exclusive to this exhibition.
