Chic – and child friendly – hotels in the French Alps

Those looking for great skiing with small children on sun-kissed slopes need only head to Méribel in the French Alps, which has recently opened its first five-star hotel – Le Kaïla (www.lekaila.com; from €345) – or Courchevel 1650.

Le Portetta is the hotel that makes this latter Trois Vallées resort popular (www.leportetta.com; from £148), its self-catering, loft-style apartments (pictured) working best. One can sit on the terrace while watching the children make their first descent: ESF’s nursery slope is within a snowball’s throw, and there’s a new Scott Dunn kids’ club. Add to that the open-air bar, Fire & Ice, with Chesterfields, fire pits and a pizza oven and you’ve got a hotel that’s glamorous without being pretentious.
