It has already graced the walls of many a notable institution – including New York’s Guggenheim and Moscow’s Museum of Modern Art – but in December, philanthropist Henry Buhl’s 400-strong private photography collection will go on sale at Sotheby’s New York. Highlights include Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer’s The Lonely Metropolitan (first picture, estimated at $250,000-$350,000) and Alfred Stieglitz’s Georgia O’Keeffe – Hands with Thimble (second picture, $800,000-$1,200,000).

The auction is expected to raise between $8m and $12m, with 70 per cent of sale proceeds going to The Buhl Foundation’s education and youth projects, and Buhl’s charity ACE, which supports the homeless in New York.
