The husband-and-wife partnership behind Nineteen Seventy Three (the company is named after the year they were both born, and was set up 30 years later) describe themselves as “makers of beautiful paper things”. Being a big fan of all things beautiful and papery, I logged onto their e-store with credit card in hand and found myself at the checkout some 30 minutes later (I’d been through each of the 15 departments, read the licensed artists’ biographies and dropped by the blog) with a laden basket.
This is what I bought: a selection of fabulous alphabet cards by Paul Thurlby inspired by 1960s posters (first picture, £2 each); Matt Wingfield’s signed screen print of a spray can (second picture, £45); a complete set of Pantone postcards which I intend to frame and hang above my desk to bring a chic, graphic artist vibe to my workspace (third picture, 80p each); some charmingly nostalgic Belle and Boo Pirate Party invitations depicting the kind of children’s party modern parents can only dream of (fifth picture, £4.99); and a bright and very beautiful Countryside Notebook, designed by 1973 themselves (£4.50). The total spend was modest, the joy that my – mostly recycled – papery purchases have brought to my daily life is less so.
