A blazer that converts into rugged outdoor wear

I would never really expect a men’s luxury tailoring brand to bother with something as practical as multi-functionality in a garment. So I was surprised when I visited Corneliani in Bond Street recently to find an immaculately tailored navy blue blazer with an optional zip-on inner section that immediately transforms it from smart urban-appropriate attire into a more rugged outdoorsy weekend look. For me performance in a garment is paramount, whether it’s finding a plain cotton T-shirt that doesn’t end up with twisted seams as soon as you wash it or a luxurious tailored jacket that will keep you warm on your commute into London but still look smart enough when you are sitting in a restaurant in Mayfair. And this one from Corneliani (£990) ticks all the right boxes.

What’s great about it is that from a sartorial perspective its dual incarnations are literally poles apart. When viewed without its optional innards, you would simply never expect such a smart blazer to transform into something so practical. I plan to wear mine with chinos, a crisp white cotton shirt and a pair of tan leather driving shoes for dinner in London. But I’ll zip on the inner section and throw it on with my jeans and walking boots if ever I manage an escape to the country.
