If you’re looking for a really special wallpaper, the new Tailor Made Collection from Cole & Son could be just the thing. It’s essentially a semi-bespoke service in which you create, step by step, your own unique wallpaper. Cole & Son has been hand-blocking and flocking wallpapers since 1873 (and screen-printing since the 1940s) and has a huge archive of beautiful papers, one of which is bound to inspire.

First you choose a design from a range of patterns – it could be a traditional damask or floral, or a more unusual block print. There are also some stunning contemporary prints, such as a brightly coloured butterfly or a subtle tree-trunk design. Then you choose a background finish, from a solid colour, a stripe or perhaps a modern silver foil. Lastly, you pick colours for both the pattern and the background – at which point there are no limitations. Metallics and flocks are also available. And if you think making these decisions might be too difficult, help is at hand from Cole & Son’s advisers, who will guide you through the process.

The Rococo Damask (second picture) has been printed in gold on a custom-dyed turquoise background. Each paper is a one-off, so individual quotations are given, but as a guide, bespoke papers cost from £167 a roll, with a minimum order of 10 rolls, and there is an eight-week lead time. Consultations and trial services take place at the company’s factory in north London or at the customer’s address, and a range of samples can be sent out on request.
