As a firm believer in the “curative powers of cosiness”, Jo Riley founded e-shop The Atlantic Blanket Co in 2007, after trying – and failing – to source a suitably snug blanket to comfort her daughter.
Four years on, and The Atlantic Blanket Co still sticks close to its original mandate, stocking an exhaustive range of blankets and throws, which Riley sources from her base on the picturesque north Cornish coast. Blankets come in every conceivable wool (think mohair, cashmere, alpaca or merino) plus cotton fleece, and Riley excels in tracking down unusual weaves and patterns such as a Norwegian Hegg design (second picture, £130), Kattefot (cat’s foot) design (£130), and Crofters style (£130), which she describes as: “Perhaps a little Scottish, a little Welsh, perhaps a little Scandinavian, but more than a little soft”. A selection of jewel-toned traditional wool picnic rugs (£80) are made in Wales and come with thoughtful details such as leather carry-straps and a practical waterproof ground sheet.
A large section of the site is devoted to baby blankets (“The blankets of our childhood linger long in the memory,” says Riley) and ranges from the comfortingly old-fashioned, such as a creamy Aran blanket (£45) to the extra-soft cotton-fleece pram blanket (£18), which features an endearing whale design and comes in red or blue stripes, plus a luxurious blush-pink cashmere version (£135).
In fact, Riley’s taste in all that is soft, warm, luxurious and practical is so impeccably honed that I felt confident enough to order a “random rug” (£25), a one-off checked blanket in a mystery colour, which is pleasingly eco, using up yarns left over from other weaves. And, true to form, it’s perfect.
