Anyone who spotted Donna Wilson’s quirky knitted creatures at her graduate show at London’s Royal College of Art in 2003 couldn’t help but fall in love with them. And even if you don’t recognise her name, the chances are you will already have seen some of her offbeat little monsters. What’s less well known is that Wilson now makes a wide range of homeware and personal accessories – all in a similarly cheeky vein. And this ever-growing collection is now available via her vibrantly colourful website.
All Wilson’s designs are fun, colourful and sure to put a smile on your face. Even a knitted lambswool Rain Drop Dark Cloud cushion (first picture, £68), complete with knitted raindrops attached underneath, is likely to brighten a dull day (there’s also a small pink cloud, at £35).
And that’s the point about her work: while being generally very practical and always well made, it never takes itself too seriously. Check out her sassy and contemporary take on traditional Staffordshire dogs (second picture, £235 per pair), with their wry, hand-painted grins, or her Bird Nest Soup melamine tray whose tangled, charming illustration has the simplicity of a child's drawing (fourth picture, £29).
This sense of playfulness permeates all her soft furnishings including Ernest, a circular pouffe (£327), created by stuffing calico bags and upholstering them with knitted lambswool panels – a bit like a segmented orange. And her deliciously soft lambswool blankets are brightened by surprising designs such as a graphic pattern of bold leaves and subtly defined fox faces (third picture, £244) or the magical Up The Garden Path cashmere blanket produced in collaboration with a Scottish company, Roam (£595).
These are just some of the delights available alongside ceramics, glassware, stationery, scarves, socks and make-your-own kits as well as Donna’s signature “creatures”. Guaranteed to lift the spirits.
